Remote sensing technology

Recent fires in the Barkly district have highlighted the benefits of using remote sensing technology in bushfire management to collect, process and deliver timely sensory data and spatial information, and accurate assessment of the fire risk, conditions, extent and fire behaviour. This imagery also assists in making informed decisions and the issuing of public warnings during fire events. The software processes data from cameras and other sensors, then geo-references and displays that data in real time.

The Gamba Fire Mitigation team recently showcased the 4D Gamba Fire table at Girraween Primary School’s annual Field Day. The 4D Gamba Fire table brings alive an exciting, animated version of Charles Darwin University’s online fire behaviour simulation. The model is designed to improve landholder knowledge of bushfire planning and mitigation strategies, and create a better understanding of the changing bushfire landscape due to invasive species such as gamba grass.

The Australian Government, through the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW) is inviting feedback on proposed scheduling decisions for managing four chemicals of concern for the environment, these being brominated flame retardants used in textiles, electronics, and aircraft and automotive spare parts.

Extension of Fire Danger Area Declaration to include parts of Central Australia

Bushfires NT and the Northern Territory Fire and Rescue Service (NTFRS) have extended the declaration of a fire danger area from the existing declaration in the Top End to the 21st parallel, located approximately 150 kilometres south of Tennant Creek. This declaration will remain in effect for a fire danger period from 25 August 2023 to 29 February 2024.
